Annex B Overnight care
These are additional criteria to be met by a childminders wishing to care for children overnight.
This annex focuses on the need for childminders to plan with parents for the continued sleep routines of the child and to put in place appropriate safety measures.
Childminders must ensure they still comply with the Registered numbers on their certificate. Children must be within hearing of the Childminder, it is permitted to use a monitor.
The Childminder must plan for the child’s privacy when washing/bathing and provide them with a suitable bed or cot and clean bedding.
All areas must be free from hazards and appropriate security arrangements are put in place to protect the premises.
No-one over the age of 16 who has not been police checked stays overnight when a minded child is present.
Childminders must consider how to implement good hygiene practices and the food and drink the child will require.
The Childminder must work in partnership with the parents to ensure the child’s normal bedtime routines are followed as near as possible and any problems that might occur discussed. Parents should be shown where their child will be sleeping.

If a child is cared for a continuous period of 28 days or more s/he is regarded as a foster child and the carer must notify the local Social Services Department.
