Liz Hodgman was responsible for supporting Bromley Childminders for nearly four years.

Liz attended the National Play Day Event, which was also BCMA’s AGM, and it was great that so many childminders came along to celebrate the work Liz has done for us in Bromley.

BCMA Chair, Ann Glover, presented Liz with flowers, gift vouchers, a cake and a book wihch childminders had signed and written their own messages for Liz to take with her.

Liz is a Lifetime Member of BCMA, and we are delighted that she is our web writer.

“We  would like to take this opportunity to thank Liz for the huge amount of her own time and commitment she has given to BCMA and the website we have today.”                                                                                           Ann Glover, BCMA Chair

Liz first Registered as a Childminder in 1995
under Registration and Inspection, Croydon Council. She went on to care for 21 children ranging in age from just 12 weeks through to 14years.

During this time she cared for several bilingual children and children with

acute milk allergies
chronic asthma,
Aspergers syndrome,
a variety of different cultural backgrounds.

Liz changed career to become a Childminder

Liz started her working life in a High Street Bank in central London. Following the birth of her first daughter she returned to work, leaving her baby in the safe hands of Pam,

a Croydon Childminder.

Inspired by Pam’s professionalism and care for her daughter and, after struggling to work in London for 2 years, Liz chose to change career and to become a Childminder herself.

As a Childminder Liz offered flexible hours, occasionally even working Saturday evenings for a family with their own restaurant.

Liz was one of the first group of childminders to join the Community Network in Croydon, before moving back to Bromley, her home town, where she re-Registered under Ofsted.

She became one of first, and very few, Ofsted Approved Home Childcarers in Bromley.

During this time Liz threw herself into all aspects of childcare:

Managing a pre-school

Setting up and running
a new carer and toddler group at a school

a crèche

an After school reading club

Helping to  run

a church carer/toddler group

a Sunday School

a Sunday morning crèche

a Church’s Summer Play Scheme

NVQ 3 Assessor for a year for a local College

Liz has a great thirst for knowledge and since 2000 she has taken at least one qualification each year.

Liz left Bromley Early Years at the end of August 2006  to take up her current post as Childminding Network and Development Officer in Croydon.

Liz worked closely with the NCMA development officer to help local childminders to establish the BCMA in 2004 and now works tirelessly in her own time to support them, by writing all the articles, policies and downloads for the BCMA website.

In 2002 Liz joined Bromley Early Years and in 2004 was promoted to manage the Childminding team.

During this period Liz produced 22 Newsletters, keeping the Childminders in Bromley informed of what was happening in childcare both nationally and locally.

Liz established the now very popular Drop-Ins at the Crofton Halls in Orpington and the Azelia Halls in Beckenham.

She set up the Support Childminder Scheme which has helped so many new childminders through the registration process.

She established the “Meet the Minder” sessions at the Bromley Library.

The two Giant Teddy Bears Picnics were organised and run by Liz, as were the three very successful Birth to Three Matters conferences.

Liz wrote and taught training courses for Bromley Childminders:

Meeting the National Standards,
Policies and Portfolios
Managing Behaviour
Baby signing - an introduction,
Easter Arts and Crafts session
Christmas Arts and Crafts session

Liz also delivered all the pre registration briefing sessions.

Liz worked closely with the Network Co-ordinators to develop systems and databases to support the work of the Community and Special Needs Childminders in Bromley.

She was a key player in developing the portfolio for the NCMA approval process of the Bromley Networks.

Liz regularly attends training workshops and conferences to further develop her knowledge and practice.

Liz was an NCMA portfolio and visiting assessor for the Quality First Scheme.

She has a level 4 certificate in Early Years Practice

Liz continues to support childminders and to enhance her qualifications.
