Dear Childminder 30 June 2006
Possible outbreak of E.Coli at Hayes Primary School
Ofsted require childminders to inform them of any significant event, this includes food poisoning. Therefore as a precaution I would recommend that if you, any member of your family or a minded child has had contact with Hayes Primary School, you contact Ofsted on the helpline number 0845 601 4771 and ask them to record your call on file.
You should inform all parents of minded children of the suspected outbreak and provide them with information on the symptoms. An additional Fact Sheet has been enclosed and further copies can be obtained from the Bromley Childminding Association website www.bromleycma.org.uk or from the Early Years and Childcare Centre, 2 Westmoreland Road.
I would also recommend that you ask parents to sign a declaration stating that they have received details of the suspected outbreak, signs and symptoms, and advice on how to prevent the spread of the bacteria. I would also include that they give permission for their child to continue in your care and will alert you immediately if their own child shows any symptoms. A sample declaration is enclosed which you may use or adapt as necessary. [keep this declaration in your files] Additional copies can be downloaded from the BCMA website.
Yours sincerely
Liz Hodgman

Possible E. Coli outbreak at Hayes Primary School – School closed as a precaution
On Tuesday 27 June 2006 the Head Teacher of Hayes Primary School informed the Local Authority of an outbreak of a gastro-type virus at the school. Following a joint investigation between the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and Bromley Environmental Health Team, one of these cases has been confirmed as E. Coli, a severe form of gastroenteritis and as others at the school are showing similar symptoms, it is possible that they have the same infection. After taking expert advice at a multi-agency meeting late yesterday, a range of preventative measures have been set in place. Therefore as a precautionary measure, and on advice from the HPA, we have decided in consultation with the Head Teacher that the school will be closed from today until Monday 17 July 2006.
