Do you help your afterschool children with their spellings?

DCSF have now produced a downloadable publication to support teachers and parents with teaching children to spell.

The National Strategies has produced the Support for Spelling support materials to help primary schools improve the teaching of spelling. The materials are aligned to the Letters and Sounds materials produced for Early Years and KS1 for the teaching of phonics and early spelling, and will therefore support teachers in ensuring progression in spelling and in the direct teaching of spelling from KS1 into KS2.

For download options follow the link http://publications.teachernet.gov.uk/default.aspx?PageFunction=downloadoptions&PageMode=spectrum&ProductId=DCSF-00171-2009&

Nominate friends and family for a new kitchen!

An advertising campaign for Ikea is looking for real people to surprise with a brand new kitchen, based around our Croydon Ikea branch.
As it has to be a surprise, they are looking for people to nominate a friend or family member who they think really deserves this, whilst keeping it a secret from them.
It would be great for this wonderful opportunity to go to a really deserving person so do want to nominate their friends or colleagues?
For more information, send your details to us Monkey Kingdom, along with the home town/city of the nominee (they are unfortunately restricted to those living within or near the M25) to
kitchen@monkeykingdom.com or call 0207 749 3143 or download leaflet.

Bromley Mencap Childminding Networks

I am very pleased to say that Bromley Mencap Childminding Networks have been assessed and re-approved as NCMA ‘Children Come First’ Quality Assured Networks from September 2009 – 2012.

As part of the assessment the NCMA assessor selected at random 2 of our lovely Childminders to visit with me to chat about their practice and the network.  The remainder of the time she spent at Bromley Mencap with me looking through my files and monitoring my paperwork!  She left mid-afternoon stating that she had had “a lovely day”.

The Bromley Mencap Childminding Network provides a service for children with learning disabilities.  Registered childminders offer a service that reflects the differing needs of the families and children who use it.  Children are carefully matched with the childminders who have undertaken specialist training to be able to care for them.

If you are interested in joining or knowing more about the Network please contact me at Bromley Mencap:  020 8466 0790 or email carol.harris@bromleymencap.org

Safer Internet Day: Tuesday 9th February 2010

European Safer Internet Day (SID) is supported by countries throughout Europe and during the week, a range of activities will be taking place across the continent to help protect young people online. The theme for SID10 is ‘Think Before You Post’ and we hope to make the whole week (from Monday 8th February – Friday 12th February 2010) a week of action in the UK.

http://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/saferinternetdayuk/

Why not use this day to look at how you keep children in your care safe on the internet. Maybe time to write a policy, chat with the children and look at some related safety websites. Links to the Every Child Matters Outcome, Stay Safe, and the EYFS Welfare Requirement, Safeguarding and promoting children's welfare.
