Are you insured to administer specialist medication?

A local childcare professional sought clarification regarding the use of Epipens and whether childminders would be covered by their own insurance policies. We are pleased to share the information with you and hope you will find this informative

“The general rule of thumb is that the childminders hold some sort of proof that they have had the appropriate training to administer Epipens, so any sort of certificate would be satisfactory.  With regard to childminders being trained by parents, then it would be advisable to get a letter from parents stating that they had given them the training.  Otherwise it would be advisable if the childminder asked if the practice nurse and their doctors surgery could give them training (or an equivalent medically trained person) and ask for something in writing to show proof of the training. ... We also advise any childminder that has to administer any sort of specialist medication should hold the appropriate training and hold proof of the training.”

So if you may need to use an Epipen, or to administer any kind of specialist medication, you should first ensure you have appropriate training and then obtain a letter or certificate to record this. If you have a specific query regarding your insurance policy you should contact the insurance company directly.
