The Early Years Foundation Stage
Observations, Assessment and Planning

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets the standards for learning, development and care of children from birth to 5. It builds on, and replaces, the existing Curriculum Guidance for the  Foundation Stage, Birth to three matters framework and the National Standards for Under-8s' for daycare and Childminding. Registered childminders need to use EYFS from September 2008.

Observations, Assessment and Planning provides registered Childminders in the London Borough of Bromley an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new framework and to try out different types of planning and recording observations.

Presented by Jane Cole
Jane Cole is an independent early childhood consultant working with practitioners, settings and local authorities. She has had a varied career in many aspects of education including headteacher of a nursery school which offered extended services including a range of provision for children up to three with their parents and carers in a high quality family room.

Jane was also the early years adviser in Croydon working with the partnership team and staff in the voluntary, independent and private settings as well as school improvement services. She acted as support headteacher to the Forum for Maintained Nursery Schools based at Early Education supporting a website and producing a termly newsletter. This post offered many opportunities to work with colleagues across England and in the DfES.

In March 2004 she was appointed as one of the new team of Regional Directors, Foundation Stage, part of the Primary National Strategy. This post involved working on a number of national projects including, ‘Celebrating Young Children and those who live and work with them’ in partnership with Early Education, and with sixteen Local Authorities in London. As part of this team Jane contributed to the production of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework.

BCMA’s Annual General Meeting was held during the evening.

Oservations
We have produced an observation booklet based on the new EYFS. Each book is designed to record short observations on a child, links to the framework and next steps. It includes information on doing observations, the EYFS and Early Learning Goals. It is a great way to share the child’s development and progress with Parents and to evidence to Ofsted at inspections that you are implementing the framework effectively.

Planning

This booklet has been designed to help Childminders to record activities, why they planned them, how they link to the six areas of Learning and Development and an evaluation. Ideally it should be used alongside the BCMA booklet ‘look, listen and note’ or other observational records that you have made. On the grid in the centre of the booklet, record the date against the different areas of learning that you have covered/linked to. Over a period of time you should have planned activities over the whole range of the framework.

The booklets are available at reduced rates to Bromley Childminders and will be available to purchase at the AGM.

Childminders outside the Borough may purchase copies via our online Payments Centre
