CALLING ALL PARENTS!

During the first three months of this year Bromley is reviewing its support services aimed at parents. A significant part of this review includes consultation with parents about what kind of services they would find most helpful to support them in their parenting role.

The following questionnaire asks about what kind of services you as a parent use, or would like to be available. By ‘parenting services’ it means any service that offers help, advice, support and information on all aspects of parenting – for example, helplines, group work, one to one support, counselling, therapeutic support, home visits, parenting courses, drop-in advice centres, book loans, television programmes, etc.

Your views are very important and will help to shape services across our borough.

The Sleepover is the first in a series of books that Kid Premiership is planning with author Irene Mooney, who has 20 years experience of working with disabled children and young adults in both respite-care and childminding services. Childcare Act 2006: Future Approach to fees and subsidies - consultation
On 21 November 2007 the DCSF launched their consultation into a proposed new fees structure for the Early Years Register (EYR) and Ofsted Childcare Register (OCR).
“NCMA is concerned that the new fees represent a significant new burden for childminders. An increase of 400 per cent for the EYR over three years and 686 per cent for the OCR over one year will come as a significant shock to childminders..”  source: www.ncma.org.uk

England goes smokefree - How will this affect childminders?

From 1 July 2007 it will be illegal to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places and
workplaces in England.

Because childminders work in domestic premises, the law may apply differently in some circumstances. NCMA has put together information, checked by the Department of Health, about how the new law affects childminders and nannies. To read the document visit: http://www.ncma.org.uk/download/smokefree.doc

Happy 2nd Birthday
It's now two years since we launched this website and the nine local area websites. We have been delighted with the feedback we have received from our visitors via comments on the guest book and emails. We had 10,000 visitors in our first year, and in our second year over 27,000. The site continues to grow and with the mandatory introduction of the Early Years Foundation Stage in September 2008 more pages will be added over the coming months, offering support on its implementation.

We would like to take this opportunity of thanking the Webmaster, Pat Myles and the Webwriter, Liz Hodgman. They have worked tirelessly for the last two years to develop the site from its original planned 4 pages in January 2006. Without their commitment and dedication this would not have been achieved. Thank you all for your continued support.

NEWS ITEM ADDED 7 OCTOBER 2007
BCMA AGM and Introduction to EYFS
We held our third Annual General meeting on 26th September at the Emmanuel church, West Wickham. The event was attended by 77 childminders along with representatives from Bromley Early Years and the National Childminding Association.
Jane Cole was the guest speaker at the AGM. She recently retired from the Department for Education and Skills (now Department for Children, Schools and Families) to work as a consultant supporting the delivery of EYFS, the project that she had been working on at DfES. Jane’s passion for the new Early Years Foundation Stage framework inspired those at the meeting and many childminders who had expressed concerns regarding the implementation of it were reassured. Jane recommended that childminders start to implement the framework now or as soon as possible and not wait until it becomes mandatory in September 2008.
We would like to thank Jane on behalf of all the childminders who attended for giving up her evening to support our event. All childminders who attended the event received a certificate and a free copy of BCMA’s EYFS Observation Booklet.
These are also available to
purchase from our on line shop.

Common Assessment Framework in Bromley - Download Full Details

The CAF will be introduced in Bromley over the next few months as part of delivering quality and timely services to children, young people and families. There has been much preparation and planning in CYPS over the last several months in order to ensure a smooth implementation of CAF in Bromley. The CAF is a good example of us all working together to ensure joined-up thinking and a true multi-agency approach to supporting and addressing the needs of children.

New Inspection Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage

Michael Hart, Director of Children at Ofsted, outlined the changes at a conference last week , however they have not been posted in detail on the Ofsted website.

Hart said a new self-evaluation form, which would be a crucial part of inspections, would be launched in May or June to give providers time to prepare.

Reports would be compiled under the headings of effectiveness of provision, how inclusive services are, welfare outcomes, learning and development requirements, and leadership and management quality.

For further information
 http://www.cypnow.co.uk/bulletins/Daily-Bulletin/news/784845/?DCMP=EMC-DailyBulletin

As soon as Ofsted publish the inspection framework BCMA will work to provide ideas on how Childminders can provide evidence under the new inspection headings etc.

Latest Consultations
There are three consultations that will be of interest to childminders:

Time to talk

Time to talk (young peoples version)

Staying Safe (young peoples version)

If you are caring for older, school age children then why not print off a copy of the young peoples version for them to have a look at. Explain to them what a consultation is and how this is their opportunity to shape the future for children. Share it with their parents and then support them to record their answers and respond to the consultation either in writing or on line. Keep a copy and include it in your records. It is excellent evidence to an Ofsted inspector that you are supporting children to make a positive contribution
