Childminder Programme 1
We visit accredited Childminder Julie Thomas in Birmingham who looks after a pair of three year olds. Having noticed the children's excitement about buses, Julie builds a bus journey into her plans.
This programme follows Tom and Riley's journey, as they talk excitedly about passengers, see other buses, and both notice and take photographs of key features of the journey.
At the bus station, they notice the timetable which involves working with numbers. Back at the Childminder's, they consolidate their learning. They use the photographs to recall and order the journey. They role play about the bus, using a large cardboard box and also draw and make models around the bus theme.
This programme looks at the way Julie plans from a child-initiated starting point, skillfully leads the learning and follows up an experience in the everyday environment with play at her "setting".
Childminder Programme 2
Sheila Sage, a primary adviser with responsibility for early years in Worcestershire is joined by a panel of experts to discuss Childminding techniques as seen in the previous programme: Childminder 1.
Those taking part in the discussion include Ged Cotton, an infant school headteacher and previously team leader for early years at QCA, early years consultant and author Diane Rich, together with special guest Julie Thomas, the Childminder featured in the programme "Childminder 1".
The panel discuss child-centred starting points for planning and how the National Childminding Association (NCMA) can support planning.
The panel discuss Julie's bus journey, her questioning, the use of a digital camera and how numbers in the real world on the buses and timetables motivate mathematical development. They analyse the resources in the garden and Julie's role, specifically how much intervention there should be in role play.
The Foundation Stage/Curriculum Planning
Currently only accredited Childminders working as part of a Quality Assured Network can deliver the Foundation Stage Curriculum and the parents access the Nursery Education Grant Funding. However it is good practice for all Childminders to have a copy of the Curriculum Guidance to the Foundation Stage and have an understanding of it. They will then be far better equipped to support children’s learning once they attend pre-school and right through to the end of the Reception year at school.
To obtain a copy of the Curriculum Guidance call QCA publications on 01787 884444 and quote QCA/00/587.
