Activities
Babies and children learn so much from every interaction they have with you.
Lets look at a very simple activity that you might do with a baby or toddler.
The baby sits on your lap, you gently take their hand and sing ‘Round and round the garden’ and you do the gestures. The baby laughs at ‘tickle you under there’ you say ‘again’ and you start the whole song again on the other hand. A simple activity probably happening up and down the country each and every day, but it contains so many components of the framework.
A Healthy Child Being special to someone
Being active, rested and protected
Discovering and learning about his/her body
A Competent Learner Making connections through
the senses and movement
Becoming playfully engaged and involved
Pretend play with gestures and actions, feelings
and relationships, ideas
and words
A skilful communicator Positive relationships
Enjoying and sharing stories, songs, rhymes and
games
Learning about words and meanings
Understanding each other
A strong Child Understanding that s/he can be
valued and important to someone
Being able to snuggle in
Enjoying being with a familiar and trusted others
Take a look at the components and I am sure you will find many more areas that this activity covers.
Why not spend a little time recording some of the activities that you do with your minded children and how they fit into the aspects and components of the framework. This can be done in a variety of ways, using different mediums.

Birth to three Matters -
Just for fun -
On this page Liz Hodgman provides you with ideas on how to implement the framework and documents to download and use in your own home. All good practitioners will be using the framework daily in their activities and routines, but we know many of you worry about how you can demonstrate to the Ofsted Inspector that you are.
In October 2005 it became part of the Ofsted Inspection framework for all childminders to have a knowledge and be using the Birth to three matters framework.
Inspectors will be looking at how the framework is used and how it has influenced
the outcomes for children in your care.
Birth to three matters packs are available
from the Dfes website www.dfes.gov.uk
email dfes@prolog.uk.com or call 0845 602

Routines.
Take a few minutes to reflect on all the routines that you do daily with the babies and young children in your care. Jot them down and then using the download form record each routine and how it fits into the framework. Keep these in a file or your portfolio to show parents and your inspector.
Routines could include feeding, nappy changing, settling a baby for a nap, getting ready to collect the older children from school, rest time etc.
Still not sure what to put in the grid, then have a look at a sample completed one
to give you some ideas.

Observations
Most childminders make observations, only they don’t realise they are doing it! How would you know that the child in your care is ready to move onto a more challenging jigsaw if you haven’t observed them doing a simple one and mentally noted that they did it unaided and very quickly?
Observations don’t need to be pages long and take hours to write. In fact they can just be a few words jotted down. On the top right hand corner of the 16 component cards is a section called ‘Look, Listen, Note’ and these contain lots of ideas to focus your observations on.
For example:’Note how young children develop large motor skills for walking, climbing or jumping’ A Healthy Child Growing and Developing So you might note ‘he pulled himself up to standing using the toybox’
‘she climbed the four steps on the slide on all fours’
Use the download grid to record your observations and show how it links to the framework.
These will provide you with a wonderful record of the development of your minded
child as s/he reach their milestones. Great to share with parents and your Ofsted
Inspector!
